Finish: Short to medium. Lingering sweetness with very little spice. Soft and delicate finish with little to no burn. A very easy drinker. Many of these great writers, on occasion, would take refuge in their local public house, where they could draw inspiration from their observations of daily life while enjoying the comfort of their favourite dram of whiskey. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. Writers’ Tears is a range of independently bottled Irish whiskey by Walsh Whiskey, a company founded by husband and wife team Rosemary and Bernard Walsh in 1999 to market their Hot Irishman brand of bottled Irish Coffee. On the nose: Slightly floral but very fruity – orchard fruit abundant, apples, a hint of peach and loads of stewed pears. Vanilla, white grape too. Some spice builds with cinnamon and nutmeg along with some caramel sweetness.

Finally, the Mizunara Cask. Sadly much like Ireland's Rugby World Cup tournament this whiskey just didn't really work for me. I really struggled to get the chocolate, coconut and fruitiness that you expect to get from Mizunara Oak. Instead this just became a spice driven cask fest that dominated the spirit and detracted from the whole experience. This has been flirting with a 3, so possibly I'm mellowing in my old age. Yet again my dalliances with Travel Retail only result in disappointment.th MAY, 2019 – Carlow, Ireland: Walsh Whiskey has created a new core expression for it’s Writers’ Tears range which focuses on exploring the rarest of whiskey blends first made popular in 18 th century Ireland – aged Single Pot Still and Single Malt premium whiskeys. Double Oak is the third core expression in the Writers’ Tears range which includes the Copper Pot and Cask Strength versions. It is the 14 th expression in the wider Walsh Whiskey portfolio, including the extended Writers’ Tears and The Irishman ranges. A Blend of Two Premium Irish Whiskey Styles, Aged in Two Types of Wood to create Writers’ Tears Double Oak. On the nose: Quite a green and spicy nose. Green apples, lemon thyme, green wood and pot still spice. Honey sweetness comes through in time with malt and a hint of mint. Light milk chocolate notes with new leather too.

Established in 1999, Bernard and Rosemary Walsh started Walsh Whiskey with the vision to create whiskey which “offer[s] taste profiles that are unique, through the recreation of traditional Irish whiskey recipes from the 19th Century – Ireland’s golden era of whiskey distilling.” With a market saturated by excellent Irish whiskey, the majority owned by the Pernod Ricard conglomerate , Walsh Whiskey has proved that the Writers’ Tears line is a dependably available and quality Irish whiskey. A mixed bag with definite peaks and troughs from the folk at Walsh Whiskey but the stars of the show being the core range expressions rather than the Travel Retail exclusive. Through its partnership with the Legaret family, Walsh Whiskey recently introduced French oak to followers of the Writers’ Tears portfolio with the limited release of Writers’ Tears Cognac Cask. Encouraged by it’s success, Bernard Walsh decided to make French oak a permanent feature in the Writers’ Tears portfolio through the introduction of Writers’ Tears Double Oak. Writers’ Tears Double Oak, is a blend of the two premium whiskey styles aged in two types of wood – American and French Oak. It is triple-distilled, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. The new expression is made possible by a close collaboration between the Walsh family in Ireland’s County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac, France.

Carlow, which was completed in 2016. In 2019, however, the partnership was dissolved, with the Walshes keeping their brands and relinquishing their stake in the Royal Oak distillery to Saronno. Writers' Tears is an unusual blend for Ireland in that no grain whiskey is used. Instead, this is a blend of triple distilled Single Malt and triple distilled Single Pot Still whiskey, both of which have been sourced from Bushmills and Midleton respectively. The blend is roughly 60% malt and 40% pot still and the grain is unpeated.
