Description

The distillery has been part of Diageo (formerly Distillers Company Limited) since 1927, after several shutdowns and changes of ownership.

Finish: lasts well, really good length, fruit and peat combine really nicely, bit of tingle on the back of the pallet and throat. Experimentation is key when blending these two stalwart buddies: Start out with more Talisker and then the next time try more Caol Ila in the blend.

It may also be worth noting that after an hour or so in the glass it does start to break down a little - becoming overly sour and one-dimensional. palate:lots of fruits, orange zest ,honey, oak lots of oak, chocolate after a minute or so,greatest whisky ever tasted by me look into my cabinet to see what I've got than you will know, since today my number one , a must have whisky, just makes me wonder what sort of load bring you older versions of Caol ila.

As far as Islay whiskys go i think too much talk is given to Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg, the big three. Peat' separate from smoke is an experience of the decaying earthy vegetative matter which is peat, without the simultaneous smell and taste of smokiness, as from the burning of that peat. The distillery was founded in 1846 and is situated on the shores of the Sound, a spot originally chosen partly because of the clean water from Loch Nam Ban which still provides its main supply. While Diageo does have a core range for this and releases the occasional unpeated releases, it seems like they’re not really focusing on it. I agree yhat 97 is so high that it is difficult to find higher places on the scale for suoerextremely nice whisky.

This Islay distillery is one of the lesser know, probably because the largest part of its production is destined for the blends, particularly Johnnie Walker. This is a very smooth, balanced, and lighter whiskey that I enjoyed straight out of the bottle after opening.

Today I’ll be trying the 12 Year Old and 18 Year Old from their core range and an Indie that shall remain a surprise for now. I don’t know if it’s fair comment but I read that Caol Ila overwhelmingly use refill casks so perhaps this lends itself to preserving the heat of the spirit, certainly at these low ages? We'll send them to be recycled and you'll save paper, carbon emissions and time at the recycling centre!
