Description

For another revival of an old book you might like to look at Up in the Tree by Margaret Atwood and younger children looking for a book about growing might enjoy One Year With Kipper by Mick Inkpen. Nice to read this vintage story from 1947 with Helen Oxenbury's attentive and down-to-earth illustrations. Oxenbury conveys the expressive postures of childhood in the boy's skipping gait, his stance as he ponders something, and his pensive gaze as he considers his changing world.

The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss | Goodreads

thoughtful, detailed illustrations capture the beauty that comes with the start of a new season, from the trees bursting with blossoms to the darkened skies of autumn days presaging winter’s approach. Some of these experiences (such as losing teeth - although not common at this age, I have known it to happen, and they may have older siblings) might trouble them, so this topic can provide reassurance.Beautifully presented as an illustrated paperback, it is the perfect book for all little children wondering if theyre growing too. I think the way this story is written using lots of repetition and constantly relating to the seasons and nature changing shows the reader that the little boy is growing as everything is changing however, you feel a sense of sympathy in case he isn’t!

The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss and Helen Oxenbury The Growing Story by Ruth Krauss and Helen Oxenbury

A quartet of board books-I Touch; I See; I Can; and I Hear-unite for one oversize volume: Helen Oxenbury's Big Baby Book.Having gotten to know each other in Charley’s First Night (2012), Henry and his dog Charley are now thick as thieves. This is a lovely book about a young boy who watches everything around him grow, but feels that he himself isn't growing. The original text was published in 1947, however, the illustrations have been recently updated by Helen Oxenbury, a wise choice. The boy continues not to believe her until he tries on his winter coat at the beginning of the next season and discovers that it no longer fits.

There is also a puppy, and some chicks, and of course plant life, from corn in the fields to apples in the orchard. The illustrations perfectly capture the gentle spirit of Krauss's classic text (HarperCollins, 1947). Ruth Krauss’ original text from 1947 is given fresh life by two-time Kate Greenaway medalist Helen Oxenbury. The pivotal moment occurs when the boy unpacks his warm clothes in preparation for the onset of colder weather and sees for himself that he has indeed grown. Well suited to a 3-D adventure, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig: Pop-up Edition by Eugene Trivizas, illus. Beautifully presented as an illustrated paperback, it is the perfect book for all little children wondering if they're growing too. Beautifully presented as an illustrated paperback, it is the perfect book for all little children wondering if they’re growing too. For younger Key Stage 1 children, however, growing up is an exciting and far from melancholy business, which generally happens all too slowly.
