Description

Boarding Patrol: Leagues of Votann provides a balanced force of technologically advanced warriors, ideally suited to seizing resources and victory in games of Warhammer 40,000 – especially in the dense and deadly Boarding Action missions detailed in the Arks of Omen series – and will save you money compared to buying the kits separately. Set Overwatch: This can be performed in the Movement Phase, and allows the unit performing it to fire Overwatch against enemy units. First, the fact that it still runs on modified Warhammer 40,000 rules, so you have to get a couple of 40K rulebooks just to know how it plays and what your army can do, and second, the fact that the game’s missions are very much dependent on you owning the specific (and very expensive) scenery for playing inside Arks of Omen released by Games Workshop. Boarding Actions is a game mode for Warhammer 40,000 that simulate the boarding missions which took place during the Arks of Omen campaign in Warhammer 40,000’s 9th edition.

If you prefer your anti-tank options a little more discrete, the Sicaran Venator trades mass for speed and can wind its way around enemy flanks before lancing neutron beam laser blasts right through the sides of opposing tanks. So, though as good as the box is, it’s not entirely ready to play out of the box. You’ll need to subtract at least 140 points to make it playable. Dice and Tape Measure: Just like regular 40K, Boarding Actions uses 6-sided dice and a tape measure in inches to play the game. That said, I don't want to go too deep on the stats of each unit with 10th edition so close at hand. It wouldn't be very useful. So I'll just give you an overall impression of what they are and what they're good at. Uthar The Destined There’s much profit to be found in the esoteric salvage secreted aboard these rotting void-barges – and you can acquire it for the glory of your own Hold with five cybernetically-enhanced Cthonian Beserks, five diamond-hard Einhyr Hearthguard, and 10 geared-up Hearthkyn Warriors, all led by a proud Einhyr Champion. The biggest change to get your head around in Boarding Actions if you’re used to playing 40K is that distance between two models isn’t measured linearly if a piece of Boarding Action scenery is between them. Instead, the distance is measured by measuring the distance one model would travel to go around that scenery towards the other model. This is because Boarding Actions doesn’t really have a vertical dimension: There’s a solid metal ceiling above your units at all time, so all scenery is as impenetrable as the edge of the battlefield (unless there’s a hatchway, which we cover below). This means that two models can be half an inch from each other, but if there’s a wall between them on that half an inch, they could be really far apart anyway in terms of game rules. Special Actions and Abilities

The Lion has risen from his 10,000-year slumber, and he’s wasting no time putting traitors to the sword. The Primarch of the Dark Angels is a monstrously powerful duelist and indomitable battlefield leader, armed with the Emperor’s own shield and a massive power sword named Fealty. Your first chance to get him is in this celebratory launch set.*

Is the Leagues of Votann Boarding Patrol Worth it?

Set to Defend: This can also be performed in the Movement Phase, and gives your unit a +1 to hit rolls in close combat until the end of your opponent’s next turn. Yep, the points cost goes way over the 500 point threshold required for Boarding Actions – and that’s before calculating all the extensive wargear options. Azrael isn’t the only Chapter Master given the Primaris treatment – Commander Dante has barely tied a bow on the apocalyptic invasion of Baal and he’s already off finding more enemies of the Imperium to destroy. Someone really needs to give the guy a holiday. Vashtorr the Arkifane Overall this is a really great start to any Votann army. It gives you some key core units and some harder hitting ones. From here you can expand in different ways depending on your personal preferences. The fact that all but the bikes are usable as a Boarding Patrol is just a bonus. If you decide to go the route of these vertically challenged armoured warriors, this is the place to start. x5 Cthonian Beserks Miniatures– The heavily augmented and courageous elite Cthonian Beserks brandish powerful mining tools and explosives to storm and break open enemy strongpoints.

What’s so interesting about this detachment is the presence of zeroes in the list above: You don’t have to bring an HQ, or even any Troops! This opens up the possibility of all sorts of fun, thematic lists (the author of this article is currently working on an all-Einhyr list for the Leagues of Votann with an added Thunderkyn unit which he would otherwise never even have bought for his 40K army, for example), and it keeps your model count relatively low. Additionally, when a Boarding Actions game begins, any units with 10 models must be split into two 5-man squads, which are then treated as two separate units. I think this is a really tough call and honestly, I’m not sure how I’d want to really mix-max everything at this point. Without having seen any real games or tournament data on the army we’re all going in based on the Dataslates here. That said, if we’re starting a new army I’d want to keep my options open. I also am not the type of person who only collects the “power units” and that’s it. So, if this was my army, I’d split the difference and get one unit of each the Hearthguard (225 points + wargear) and Thunderkyn (120 points + wargear). And as far as character support I’d go with the Grminyr (90 points). The latest issue of White Dwarf magazine continues the story of the space hulk Herald of Misery , adding new rules for deadly laser grids to Boarding Actions games and two short stories concerning the forces fighting within. Meanwhile, a Tale of Four Warlords takes on its second challenge of the year, while Part Five of The Great Stomp introduces campaign rules for Warhammer Age of Sigmar games set in the Living Peaks. This brings our total to 1845 points + wargear. I think this is the more well rounded version and give you the chance to actually use these units before you decide to play with other options. Or before you opt to follow a specific playstyle for the army. You can always go all-in with the other direction later. The List It remains to be seen how much of a breath of fresh air the game mode will actually be when all factions have had all their special rules released – will it become almost as complicated as playing regular 40K? But until them, Boarding Actions is a refreshingly streamlined, faster way of playing 40K that fits much better into the casual dinner table games that most of us actually have time for than the 2000 points way of playing 40K that’s dominating tournaments and matched play in general.

What makes this box all the more valuable is that all the kits (bar one) sit in the same price range – so it drives up the number of miniatures and gives you more plastic to play with, making the box feel more satisfying for the price with the amount you get. Boarding Patrol: Leagues of Votann – Points These are sort of like small Combat Patrol boxes explicitly made to be fielded for the new Boarding Actions. So, expect them all to have a lot of foot sloggers. If you want to, you can use Boarding Actions missions as part of a Crusade campaign – there are just some elements of it, such as some Agendas, that won’t work with Boarding Actions. This makes Boarding Actions especially suited for players in a gaming club (where someone else has already bought all the expensive scenery) starting their first foray into 40K, since you can slowly build up your force and enjoy watching it gain experience through the Crusade rules, while also playing with your smaller army in a setting that matches that smaller scale. Movement and Distance

Furthermore, this force appears to have you covered very well in both melee and shooting, with tough units to boot – the perfect kind of army list you want for a Boarding Patrol. Boarding Patrol: Leagues of Votann – Value Clad in bulky exo-armour with a rune-etched RAM shield and Autoch-pattern combi-bolter, the Einhyr Champion leads the assault with impunity. Alongside him are five elite Einhyr Hearthguard, plus a squad of Cthonian Beserks, wielding powerful mining tools that double as weapons of war, and ten Hearthkyn Warriors armed with a variety of powerful hulk-cleansing wargear. If you don’t have any Characters in your Boarding Patrol detachment, you can selsect one of your unit champions as your Warlord. You can also select any special army traits granted by your codex (with some exceptions we’ll get into in the next section), and you can select an Enhancement instead of the Warlord Traits and relics you would normally use (more on that below as well). x1 Einhyr Champion Model– a steamrolling HQ choice clad in hulking exo-armour to crush foes with a mighty charge and smash survivors with axe or hammer. The most important thing to say about getting started with Boarding Actions is that, unlike Kill Team, it’s not a particularly easy, beginner-friendly way of getting into the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
