With all the sudden chaos in her own life, she decided to make the most of what time she had left and to make the journey across the country as a way to honor that unfulfilled bucket list item. She also drew attention for riding a mule to her job at a shoe factory in Lewiston out of convenience and necessity. The census confirms that 67 year old widower and postmaster William Wilkins occupies The Post Office, comprising six rooms.

Yet in the 1950s, a woman in her 60s named Annie Wilkins defied this narrow view and launched a purposefully meandering, 16-month journey by horseback across the United States, making friends wherever she went. It took more than courage and foolhardiness to set off on a horse you hadn’t gotten to know, let alone ride one in over thirty years. Annie didn’t like to be rude to anyone offering help, so she politely told the doctor she’d think about it.Her travel companions included a strapping horse named Tarzan and her dog, a mutt named Depeche Toi (French for “hurry up”). Given that the 1911 census describes Bertie as a butcher, cycle dealer, farmer and postman and his household occupied 6 rooms, I have no doubt that Bertie and his household occupied the whole of the premises which adjoined The Crown.

The Great Ellingham Invasion Committee Record prepared in 1942, lists ‘Miss Wilkin 57″ and “Miss E Wilkin 59” at The Post Office in the village. to really share who they are, what their experiences are, how they’ve changed because of certain experiences,” he says, “I want to listen. This book also adds relevant historical information for each area she travels through, and the author describes the scenery accurately to the point where I could recognize most of the trip from my own travels. She finally rides into California having found her true self, regained her health and - defying those doctors - lives another 22 years.

The poetry seems to have had a fairly wide circulation and Wayside flowers was reviewed as far away as Chicago. Elizabeth Letts has created an indelible account of hope, loyalty, generosity, and sheer grit--and the power of a woman doing something just because she wants to do it. A woman who liked to wear pants and speak her mind, she wasn’t well regarded by local folks at the time.

Hers was a deeply emotional journey, providing her with new families in the human and natural worlds. The only daughter of Annie Wilkins’ late sister Ellen Elizabeth Wilkins, Ellen Amelia was five years old when her mother died in 1907. I first started playing music in primary school, where I had violin lessons (not something I’m proud of! More than 100 local residents gathered to pay homage to Mesannie and to welcome Rhydr and her team as they arrived in Minot on the 59th anniversary of Mesannie’s departure. William’s youngest son, Bertie (Lewis Bertie), is occupying the house adjoining the Crown Public House with his wife, Florence, and their daughter Evelyn.Eventually she moved in with her good friend, Mina Titus Sawyer up in Whitefield Maine, where she lived 24 years past her two year prognosis. And some of the incredible people of American in the 50s who contributed warm meals, clothing, cozy stables and love along the way.

The census captures Willliam Wilkins (now 47) and his wife Ann Amelia (43) in a four-roomed property in Church Street. With William are two of his eleven children, 18 year old Emma Elvina and 15 year old Lewis Bertie (also known as Bertie Lewis).
